What the exam is written on
The NWT has no territory-specific electrician licensing exam. Journeyperson certification for Construction Electrician is through the interprovincial Red Seal exam (309A), which is national and built on the Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS), not on an NWT code edition.
Adopted for installations
Canadian Electrical Code (CSA C22.1). The NWT does not issue a separate adoption notice.
Who licenses electricians in Northwest Territories, and the license path
Licensing authority: There are two separate authorities.
Apprentice (Construction Electrician)
Register with ECE ATOC through a contract of apprenticeship.
Journeyperson Construction Electrician (Certificate of Qualification, Red Seal)
Complete the apprenticeship (or qualify as a trade qualifier/challenger, criteria not confirmed) and pass the interprovincial Red Seal 309A exam (70% pass mark).
Qualified Electrical Worker registration (INF)
Electrical Protection Act and Regs s.2-3: every qualified electrical worker doing electrical work must be registered.
Residential Property Owner's Permit (not a licence)
Act s.13: issued to the owner of a single-family dwelling to do electrical work in that dwelling.
Annual Permit (not a licence)
Act s.12: issued to an operator of an industrial or commercial establishment that regularly employs or contracts with a QEW and needs short-notice alterations.

Common misconceptions about the Northwest Territories exam
- 'NT' means the Northwest Territories, not Nunavut (NU). Nunavut has its own legislation and Electrical Protection authority.
- There is no NWT-specific journeyman electrician exam.
- The NWT uses the Canadian Electrical Code (CSA C22.1), never the NEC. NEC article numbers, NFPA 70 and US ampacity tables do not apply.
- There are currently no NWT amendments to the CEC (Schedule B items repealed by R-053-2013), so questions about 'NWT-specific CEC amendments' are likely wrong.
- Licensing is not municipal. Certification is territorial (ECE) and QEW registration and permits are territorial (INF).
- There is no 'master electrician' licence class in the NWT Electrical Protection Act.
