California Electrician License Requirements: Complete 2026 Guide

California has a dual-agency licensing system: the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) issues C-10 contractor licenses, while the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) certifies individual electricians. This guide covers both paths, including exams, hours, fees, and CE requirements.

California Electrician Licensing Overview

Two Agencies: California uses CSLB for contractor (business) licenses and DIR for individual electrician certifications. Most working electricians need the DIR certification; business owners also need the CSLB C-10 license.

Reciprocity applicants may still need to pass the Law & Business exam. Check current CSLB requirements for details.

No DIR Reciprocity: California's individual electrician certification (General, Residential, etc.) does not have reciprocity with any other state. Out-of-state electricians must meet all DIR hour and exam requirements. See our reciprocity guide for more details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about California electrician licensing and certification.

What is the difference between a C-10 license and an electrician certification in California?

A C-10 license is a contractor license issued by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) that allows you to operate an electrical contracting business. An electrician certification is an individual credential issued by the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) that authorizes you to perform electrical work. You need the certification to work as an electrician; you need the C-10 to run a contracting business.

How many hours do I need for a California general electrician certification?

You need 8,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a certified electrician, plus at least 150 hours of classroom instruction per year of apprenticeship. Most apprentices complete this through a state-approved program in 4-5 years.

What is the C-10 experience requirement?

The C-10 electrical contractor license requires at least 4 years (48 months) of journeyman-level experience within the last 10 years. Up to 3 years of credit may be given for education or technical training, but you must have at least 1 year of actual journeyman-level work experience.

How much does a California C-10 license cost?

The initial application fee is $450, plus a $200 license issuance fee. You will also need a $25,000 contractor license bond and workers' compensation insurance if you have employees. The license renews on a two-year cycle.

What continuing education is required in California?

C-10 contractor licenses have no CE requirement for renewal. However, DIR electrician certifications (general, residential, fire/life safety) require 32 hours of continuing education every 3 years. CE topics include NEC updates, safety, and California electrical code requirements.

Does California have reciprocity with other states?

California has limited reciprocity for contractor licenses with Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, and North Carolina through the CSLB reciprocity program. You must have held an active license in good standing for at least 5 years. There is no reciprocity for individual electrician certifications.

What exams are required for the C-10 license?

You must pass two exams: a trade exam covering electrical knowledge and a law & business exam. Both require a score of 72% or higher to pass. The exams are administered by CSLB at testing centers throughout California.
