Common misconceptions about the Yukon exam
- WRONG: Yukon uses the NEC. Yukon uses the Canadian Electrical Code Part I, 2024 edition, since April 1, 2025.
- WRONG: Yukon has a 'journeyman electrician licence' issued by an electrical board, or a master electrician licence.
- WRONG: Yukon cities (e.g. Whitehorse) license electricians or do electrical inspections. Licensing, permits and electrical inspection are all territorial (Government of Yukon, Building Safety and Standards Branch).
- WRONG: the journeyperson exam is a Yukon-specific, open-book, PSI/Prometric exam. It is the 100-question, 4-hour Red Seal exam with a 70% pass mark, written at the Department of Education in Whitehorse.
- WRONG: apprenticeship hours are 8,000 or 9,000. Yukon Electrician (Construction) is 4 levels x 1,800 h = 7,200 h with 8-8-10-10 weeks of school.
- WRONG: apprentices may work unsupervised after a certain level, or a fixed 1:1/2:1 ratio applies.
