The Road to 8,000 Hours
It’s the magic number. 4 years. 8,000 hours. Here is everything you need to know about tracking, verifying, and protecting the time that earns your license.
Why 8,000 Hours?
The electrical trade is learned by doing. The Department of Labor (DOL) and most state licensing boards have determined that it takes approximately 8,000 hours of supervised On-The-Job Training (OJT) to master the skills required of a journeyman electrician.
That breaks down to roughly 2,000 hours per year for 4 years. During this time, you aren't just working; you are expected to gain experience across specific categories like rough-in, finish work, troubleshooting, and fire alarm systems.
The "Lost Hours" Crisis
Apprentices lose hours every year due to:
- Lost or damaged paper logbooks
- Foremen refusing to sign months later
- Changing contractors without getting records
- Simple math errors in monthly totals
What Counts Toward Your Hours?
Not all work is created equal. To get your license, your hours typically need to be:
- Supervised: You must be working under a licensed journeyman or master electrician.
- Categorized: Most programs require a mix of residential (often capped), commercial, and industrial work.
- Documented: "I swear I worked there" doesn't count. You need signed affidavits or verified logs.
How to Protect Your Time
Your hours are your currency. If you lose them, you lose time off your career. Here is how to make them bulletproof:
1. Go Digital Immediately
Paper logs get wet, torn, or lost. Cloud-based tracking logs your time permanently.
2. Verify with GPS
State boards love proof. A GPS stamp proving you were on the jobsite is hard to dispute.
3. Get Signatures Monthly
Don't wait until the end of the year. Get your foreman to sign off on your hours every month.
